The Chief Minister of Assam is the head of the Government of Assam. Once the Assam Legislative Assembly election is announced, the governor invites the party (or coalition) with a majority of seats to form the government. 

Then the governor appoints the leader of the majority party as the chief minister of Assam. The chief minister holds the office for five years and is subject to no term limits.

Since 1946, Assam has had 16 chief ministers. Eleven of these belonged to the Indian National Congress. Gopinath Bordoloi, the first Chief Minister of Assam, and Anwara Taimur is India’s first female Muslim chief minister from Assam. 


Tarun Gogoi is the longest-serving CM of Assam. He served for 15 years from 2001 to 2016. Current incumbent Sarbananda Sonowal became the Assam’s first chief minister from the Bharatiya Janata Party on 24 May 2016 by defeating Gogoi.
