Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma is the education Minister of Assam 2020.
Himanta Biswa Sarma was on born 1 February 1969 in Gandhi Basti, Ulubari, Guwahati. He is an Assamese politician from Assam.
His father’s name is Kailash Nath Sarma and his mother’s name is Mrinalini Devi. Himanta Biswa Sarma passed his Schooling from Nalbari in 1985.
After that, he joined Cotton College, Guwahati for further studies. Sarma was the general secretary (GS) of Cotton college Student’s Union from 1991 to 1992.
Himanta Biswa Sarma completed his graduation in 1990 and post-graduation in 1992 in political science from Cotton College, Guwahati.
After that, he did LLB From Government Law College, Guwahati, and obtained a Ph.D. degree from Gauhati University.
Himanta Biswa Sarma obtained Ph.D. on ‘Northeastern council: a structural and functional analysis’ under the supervision of Dr. N Hazarika in 2006.
Political career as the Education Minister of Assam
Himanta Biswa Sarma was elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly from the Jalukbari constituency for the first time in 2001 from Indian National Congress. Sarma won the election by defeating Asom Gana Parishad leader Bhrigu Kumar Phukan.
After entering into the Assam politics Sarma was re-elected in 2006. In 2011 he was elected for the third consecutive term with a record margin of more than 75,000 votes.
Sarma served (both state and cabinet) as Minister of State for Agriculture, Planning & Development, Finance, Health, Education, and Assam Accord Implementation from 2002 to 2014.
He was made Cabinet Minister for Health in 2006, and three Medical colleges in Jorhat, Barpeta, and Tezpur came up during his tenure.
In 2011 he was also made the Education Minister of Assam. During his tenure, the system of interviews was abolished and more than 50,000 teachers were appointed for the first time through TET or Teacher Eligibility Test
After serving as an MLA from Jalukbari constituency in Assam from 2001 till 2015 from Indian National Congress, Sarma joined Bharatiya Janata Party in August 2015 due to some political conflict and differences with the former chief minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi.
After joining BJP he won the Assembly elections from Jalukbari constituency for the fourth consecutive term and became a Cabinet Minister in the first BJP government in North East India.
Now Himanta Biswa Sarma has been allotted portfolios like Finance, Health & Family Welfare, Education, Planning & Development, Tourism, Pension & Public Grievances.
